Not Society’s Dirty Little Secret
One of the saddest things I see in this industry is young girls entering it when they’re barely older than my own daughter.
The money can look tempting when life feels like it’s giving you few other options. But many of these young women are not emotionally prepared for what they’re about to face.
Some begin working in brothels where there are systems and protections in place. Then they move into independent work and suddenly they’re on their own. No guidance. No mentorship. No one teaching them the safety procedures that could protect them.
And those procedures matter.
Young workers need to know how to screen bookings properly. They need to understand boundaries, and most importantly, they need to know they always have the right to say no.
No client has the right to pressure someone into unsafe practices. Yet it still happens. Some men will even threaten to withdraw payments if a worker refuses something like unprotected sex. That kind of pressure is not just disrespectful — it is dangerous.
Workers need to know they do not have to accept that.
Education and support are critical in this industry. Safer systems, better communication tools, and stronger communities can help protect the people doing the work.
One of the more interesting developments I’ve seen recently is a platform called Bonafide Xchange (BFXchange). It is designed to address some of the real problems escorts deal with every day — scams, time-wasting clients, ghosting, and a lack of safety systems.
Unlike traditional advertising sites, BFXchange is designed to give companions more control over their work. Escorts can set their own hours, services, and rates, and choose how they prefer to be contacted. Clients create profiles as well, allowing companions to screen them before deciding whether to accept a booking.
One feature that stands out is the reverse booking system. Instead of escorts waiting for enquiries, clients post the type of booking they are looking for, and companions can decide if they want to respond. It places the choice back into the hands of the worker.
There are also systems intended to reduce common frustrations in the industry. If a client sends a booking request, they must formally cancel it if they change their mind, helping reduce ghosting and wasted time. Verification systems and member-only features aim to build trust between both sides before a booking even begins.
Technology alone will not solve every problem in this industry, but steps like these show that progress is possible.
Removing stigma is just as important.
Shame keeps people silent. It stops workers from speaking up when something goes wrong and allows scammers and abusive behaviour to continue because people believe no one will report it.
The truth is that escorts are not society’s dirty little secret.
We are women working to support ourselves, pay our bills, rebuild our lives, and sometimes support families. We deal with the same struggles everyone else does — we have simply chosen a path that many people prefer to judge rather than understand.
Respect goes both ways.
When people refuse to pay deposits or try to haggle prices down to nothing, it is insulting. Would you go to work and accept your employer telling you they are only paying a fraction of your wage because that is all they feel like paying that day?
Of course you would not.
The escort industry is not going anywhere. What matters is how it evolves.
The more openly we talk about the realities of this work — the good, the difficult, and the uncomfortable truths — the closer we come to creating something better.
Safer systems. Better education. More honesty and respect on both sides.
Because at the end of the day, everyone deserves dignity in the work they do.
